Whitley Bay is a town situated in the municipality of North Tyneside, near the city of Newcastle. You can even go on the metro from Tyne and Wear, which during the summer is a good way to get to the beach. You are at the seashore, but it is impossible to swim, as the water is far too cold. However, there are plenty of other leisure activities that you can do to help you enjoy the day. The coast is very green and pretty wild, without being on the other side of the world, and you can get there by the metro! On the windy beach, which is perfect for a session of windsurfing or kite surfing, there is a sea school where you can rent all the material you need. Small houses with a sea view can be rented by the week or month. As for the restaurants, there is a bit of everything, usually Asian, Indian and Thai. The English do not have good reputation for their cuisine. For fun, apart from the beach, there are casinos, nightclubs and bars.
If you're ever in the Newcastle area I recommend that you visit this lighthouse. I went on a cloudy day, and even though it started to rain, it was a memorable experience. The lighthouse is located on the island of St Mary's, north of Whitley Bay and connected to the mainland by a concrete road during low tide (during high tide, it is inaccessible). The headlight doesn't work anymore, but there is a small museum, bar and gift shop, and lovely landscapes around the area.
