Not a lot of people know Butte, Montana as a mountain biking destination, but that’s starting to change. The city was recently noted by a mountain bike magazine for its growing trail system, and easy access and a (relatively) long season means many bikers are making the trek here. One of the top rides just outside of town is the Beaverponds Trail, a moderate singletrack ride with some steep sections. The trail is located in Thompson Park Municipal Recreation Area, which is dotted with picnic sites and trails. Beaverponds Trail is maintained by the forest service and a local cycling club. Most riders mate this with the Continental Divide Trail, which starts at the top of Pipestone Pass. This section of trail is coveted by the Butte 100, a renowned endurance bike event held annually.
