1 review of Chess Lewis

A very popular artifact

The Lewis Chessman is one of the most popular artifacts at the British Museum. An aura of mystery is present in its history. Historians believe they are most likely of Norwegian origin between the years of 1150 and 1200 AD. They were found on the Isle of Lewis (hence its name), in Outer Hebrides, Scotland and in strange circumstances.

These chess pieces are made from walrus ivory and whale teeth and take the forms of kings, queens, bishops, knights, and the pawns are in the shape of an obelisk. In addition, all of the pieces were perfectly preserved and it seemed like they had not been used before being discovered.
