Symbol of the Power of the Emperor

Toledo is one of the most visited cities by tourists, not only because of its important patrimony but also because of how well preserved it is.

In other places of many other cities there are semi demolished remains of the main entrance of the wall, but in Toledo, the entrance and the walls are perfectly preserved. Impressive. It is also impressive when you arrive in Toledo and encounter the Gate of Bisagra.

In front of it lies a complicated roundabout with a lot of traffic and it is not allowed to pass underneath it. It is recommended to park at the left where there is a free and secure parking lot. On the right side there is a park with the Tourist Office. If you pass in front of the gate towards the left you can go up to the highest point of Toledo, behind the Alcázar. If you go to the right you can walk along the wall and the escalators will also take you to the highest part but to the Jewish neighborhood.

Entrance to the City

There are two gates that closed the city, the ancient and the new one. It is one of the many doors that enclosed the city in ancient times.

They are worth seeing, going down the Arrabal neighborhood with its peculiar green and white roofs and the statue of Charles V in the patio. In front of the statue there is a map in relief of the city so you get an idea of where you are, what you have visited and what there is left to see.

In the frontal part of the door there is a relief of the two-headed eagle, symbol of the city, a gift from Charles V.

Main Entrance to the City

The Ancient Gate of Bisagra, or the Gate of Alfonso VI, used to be the main entrance to the city.

Of Muslim origin it dates back to the 11th Century and it is the only Arab remains of the wall that are still preserved. It has a rectangular structure and it has a Caliphate horseshoe arch with a big bishop and a monolithic lintel.

In the upper part there are three horseshoe arches, a gallery with windows and a parapet with battlements.
