Despite having a map of the city, I struggled to find the Cathedral because it does not have the typical cathedral and monumental aspect to which we are accustomed, it really is the Church and Convent of Mercy, who was elected as Cabildo headquarters in the 50"s full name is Cathedral of Our Lady of Mercy, and is located in the homonymous square. The building is colonial style, and was built around the year 1,610, but later had to be rebuilt several times due to two earthquakes. The church has a basilica with three naves and baroque facade with two towers unfinished, then topped belfry. The cover has three bodies, with several niches, topped balustrade. Inside there are several altarpieces and carvings of the eighteenth century. It has attached the old convent, now the headquarters of the Faculty of Fine Arts. It is declared Artistic Historical Monument of Spanish heritage. It is open only during hours of worship: Monday to Friday at 20: 00h and Sundays and holidays from 11-12h and 19h. In early September, the holidays are celebrated in honor of the patron saint of the city, Ntra. Sra. De Cinta, whose image procesiona from its current location in the sanctuary until this Cathedral. Only three blocks away is the Plaza de Toros de la Merced.

Huelva Cathedral at night!

Huelva Cathedral at night! There is a cathedral to how we're used to seeing. Small and recogidita in the Plaza de la Merced with a building at the University of Huelva.

Not the usual cathedral

Coming from the city center, the cathedral is located south of the Plaza de la Merced is one of the most important first 3-4 of Huelva! On the side of the cathedral there is a plexus University of La Merced, which is dedicated exclusively to the Faculty of Ciencias Empresariales and during the period from October to July is very easy to meet a lot of students who gather in front of the cathedral and the university.

The cathedral of Huelva dates from the 17th century

It was built on the hermitage of San Roque. It is of Renaissance Baroque architecture and it was until 1954 the hospital chapel (building annexed to the cathedral that today is the university) since it was later consecrated as a cathedral. Symbol of the city of Huelva for its location and importance has special relevance in the festivities of the Ribbon and Holy Week.
