Olkhon Island

5 reviews of Olkhon Island

Sacred Island

Excellent

Olkhon Island is very dry, basically it consists of low hills, forests of fir, that surround the lake. A long unpaved road goes to the village of Khuzhir, pop 1,500, which is the Nikita's Hotel, very hippie and known by 'Lonely Planet'. Next day an excursion to explore the island. We left at 10:00 in a very old Russian van, very cool and very hard because in the interior there are no proper roads, only dirt roads and very fine sand, with holes that even with a 4x4 can be a problem. The tour takes you to see cliffs and beaches, but sometimes the fog is so thick that you can't see. At the furthest point of the island, there is a cliff with trees full of colorful ribbons (for prayers and good wishes).

Near the village there is also a huge rock on the shore of the lake. This is perhaps the most typical picture of the island.

About 200 kilometers from Irkutsk, is the most spectacular of Baikal. This island is the largest of the lake, the deepest in the world. It has about 72 kilomteros long and just a couple of people. I would say it is one of the most spectacular sites of the Siberian route, no doubt. To reach the island, the first is 8 hours drive from Irkutsk, the final leg (rather long) unpaved and then you have to take a ferry in 5 minutes takes you to the island. The island itself is a delight to behold, notwithstanding that in the beginning, is quite dry, will gradually populated by trees. It corners indescribable and beautiful beaches, where we bathe, and earn 25 extra years of life, they say. Besides, they say that it is a magical island, and it shows, especially in the northern tip of the island, where you can see people meditating, cuddling, and doing certain rituals, the truth, brought us laughter. That caused us some reprimand "meditator", he told us that this was a magical place and we had to be absolutely silent. I think it's the ideal place for a spectacular Lake Baikal, and run a little more crowded areas, near Irkutsk. I keep recommending it, despite the beating drive.

Stunning cliffs, beaches, high mountains, steppe slopes and wild larch forests await visitors on the largest island of Lake Baikal. They can be reached best by bus or minibus ( "marshrutka") from Irkutsk bus station (Avtovokzal) from - 500 (12-13 euros) rubles for a few hour trip including Translate by ferry. Baikal is home to so many myths and legends, so to get himself as skeptical person to ponder when you enter the sacred island Olkhon and the stories of the people listening there. Olkhon is a shamanistic center, which still witness many places of worship. No stone must be insert without charge a curse, and a bad mood should the island does not even enter because otherwise the weather is adversely affected. The probably have a lot of visitors do not know why it ran all the time and was raining when I was there in late July. So better the rain jacket and sturdy shoes to pack, and leave the tent at home. Most young travelers arrive at the hostel "Nikita"s Homestead" in the main village "Khuzir" below, but you can also take a private room at the island"s inhabitants. However, you will find anything under 300 rubles (7-8 euros) per night. The civilization reaches Olchon slowly. Power is now available on the island, but water only comes from the frozen Lake Baikal, which is suitable only for football diehards for swimming. However, the water is of drinking water quality, and when heated in the banya (Russian sauna), you can use it to wash themselves. The best way to explore the island in a small group of tourists; corresponding organizes excursions to the tourist information center of Khuzhir.

The road to the island on the way took us 8 hours and lap 6. All are dirt roads ... But being in a freshwater beach that looks like a big sea, it's worth the hassle. Give them a banya, in the souvenir shop beside the leaves sell Nikita to hit back. Eye to the scrupulous, no sewage, no running water ...

C'est un endroit idéale

Excellent
