Valea Viilor Fortified Church

The fort of Valea Viilor dominates this beautiful Transylvanian town, and has been part of a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1999. The fort, as is the case in most Saxon villages, surrounds the church, which was the work of art of the inhabitants, a symbol of power and wealth. The Saxons came from Germany with their beliefs, and not as the Romanian Roman Catholics but Protestants. The church is surrounded by the oval enclosure with high walls, 8 feet high. You can get into the inside through a fortified gate on the west side of the building. In the walls of the fort, you can see some holes, through which boiling oil was poured and other methos of attack on enemies ve tried to enter the fort.
