Tierra Astur has finally reached Gijón, located in front of the popular Poniente Beach, and in the basement of one of the most characteristic buildings in Gijon due to its ship appearance outside. Following the line of its older brothers Tierra Astur Gascona and Aguila, it offers traditional Asturian dishes and an extensive menu which includes many cheeses, stews, meats, fish and varied and rich desserts.
Just a couple of blocks from the centre of Gijón, this cider house gives you the option to sit on the terrace, to have pintxos at the bar, or to eat in the restaurant. The latter was our choice and it was a success. We ordered tapas to share, accompanied by cider and wine. It's a typical Asturian restaurant with a great atmosphere.
This area has become very fashionable lately. It's an ideal place to have a glass of wine before dinner or before going out for the night. There are some really affordable places to have a bite to eat and a glass of wine for only 2 euros. Any of the bars are good, but my favorite is La Competencia where they give you a slice of fresh-baked pizza with each glass of wine you order. The only downside to going out here is that it gets fulls of people and there often times isn't a place to sit down!
The Requexu is a restaurant that has been here in Cimadevilla for several years, always maintaining good quality food. They have a variety of salads, but the best things on offer here are the meat dishes and tapas, with some specialties being particularly highly recommended, like the scrambled eggs (four different varieties). The cider is good, the Trabanco brand. As for the price, it's in the middle of the range that you'll find in this area: you can dine will for about € 12 - € 15
The Candasu restaurant is located in the area of Nuevo Gijon, on the outskirts of the city, very close to the Corte Ingles department store. It has three distinct areas: the indoor dining room, the outdoor terrace, and the ground floor for large groups. It's famous for its cider, and you can see waiters pouring the drink at blazing speed! There are varied menus available for celebrations, but you need a minimum of 20 people. I tried a few things: Iberian sausages, potatoes with three sauces (bravas, aioli, and goat's cheese), squid, grilled ribs, chicken in garlic and calamari ... all delicious! As for desserts, I've only tried the chocolate cake, the chocolate coulant, and the homemade flan (served with ice cream).
Sidreria El Globo is one of my favorite spots in Gijon. It's located in downtown on a street that runs parallel to the San Lorenzo promenade, close to the main square and Cimadevilla. It's always full of people, so it's better to book in advance. It's a two-story building, with a cider bar on the ground floor and above a space for dining. The decor is simple, and the menu specializes in typical Asturian food with plenty of seafood, cheeses, beans, beef, etc. The desserts are homemade, and as for drinks - they have an extensive wine list, but if you're in Asturias, you really ought to try the cider for which the area is famous. Every time I've gone, I've eaten really well: the portions are generous and good quality. It's not cheap - it's about 30 euro per person - but it's worth it.
Gepetto is definitely a good place to eat pizza in Gijon. I've been coming to this restaurant for years, and although the quality has lowered at times, it's generally remained more or less the same. The locals are very nice, and the service is great, although recently they've introduced a rather stupid reservation policy in the restaurant on Calle San Bernardo (at least that's the branch where we experienced it). But nevertheless, it's a restaurant worth eating at.
On my last visit to the city of Gijón we approach La Competition to see if their pizzas were just as good or similar to those that we love in Leon, and I can not complain because they were scrumptious. The pizzeria is in the middle Fomento with bars all over, its greatest environment is at night. We were 4 people and ordered 3 pizzas: the house, Roman and full moon, and 2 salads: mixed and seafood, along with coffee and a cheese mousse dessert that we loved, all for € 32.00, which I found wonderfully priced. One thing I did not know is that the kitchen has no closing time so you can go eat at 5 in the afternoon as we did.
I've only gone once (by recommendation) and I was impressed with the dinner. The seafood is of the highest quality and is very well prepared. The price is a little expensive, but it is what it is - if you want quality you have to pay. And very wrong of him not to invite us for shots after.
One of the most typical, traditional and emblematic places in Gijón to go out for a few ciders and a taps is called "Cuesta del Cholo". It's in a typical sailor/fishermen area, at the end of the marina, and is so named because it is a sloping street that climbs to the Cerro de Santa Catalina. The street is full of cider bars (called "chigres") and small bars where it's typical to have a few "culines" and weather permitting, have a gathering outside with cider and sunflower seeds. Some of the bars have a restaurant, but that mainly serve snacks, the most popular being grilled sardines. It is a very typical and there's lots of atmosphere, especially late in the afternoon.
It's a lovely place with home cooking. Good ingredients and well cooked. The service is excellent, quick and lively. I'd recommend it for people looking for a nice, typical Asturian meal. It's also very good value for money. Midday menus are available very cheap / 10 €. Excellent quality
It's next to my son's daycare, so I have eaten there several times while I waited for him. It's highly recommended. The prices are affordable and there are very nice deals. I can never remember the names of Mexican food, but I always ask for the dish in the photo of the first post. Delicious.
We arrived at Casa Gerardo with very high expectations. This restaurant has a great reputation and we were going to try a special menu so the bar was raised to the maximum level ... well, we can say that we weren't disappointed with Casa Gerardo! We could offer a thousand compliments, but let's settle for just three words: "explosion of flavor". Each bite explodes in the mouth, and your tastebuds are in for a real treat. Don't miss Casa Gerardo if you want to try some amazing food!
The Casa Trabanco is one of many homemade cider houses that abound in Gijón. It's kind of far from the village, but it offers a relaxed and friendly environment with two spaces: a very cheerful and lively restaurant-bar at the top (which also has a terrace), and a winery below, perfect for group dinners, dinner with friends or business lunches. You can go on a small tour of the facilities where they make cider (which we did). It's really interesting to see the process of apple fermentation and to watch the huge barrels where cider has been made each year. It's an ideal location to enjoy the best of Asturian gastronomy, with good quality, good price and great service. The best dishes were the steak tartare, the delicious Cod in cider, delicious Cod Tacos, Cabrales croquettes and delicious chorizo.
The Big Joe Café is a restaurant specializing in American food, with burgers, onion rings, coca-cola, etc ... very much like the Hard Rock Cafe, but with some local dishes too. The decor has a rock theme, with guitars and photographs of international artists. There are several types of burgers, starting with 180g of meat, and prices between € 7 and € 9. To accompany, there are real chips (+1.85 €), onion rings (+1.80) or salad (+1.20 €). There are other dishes besides, which I'm sure are good too, but with a hamburger and dessert you'll be left more than satisfied. For dessert, the homemade apple pie deserves a special mention. It is totally different from anything else that we've tried, and although it's very ugly, it's delicious! A good place to dine, the right price for what they offer. Even though they serve burgers, this is not McDonalds
We were part of two couples who went to this cider house last week and ordered the grilled meat. We were told there was a special of 4 for 2 for only 45 euros, so we ordered a huge plate of corned pasote, which was delicious and the meat was very tender. The secret steak and sirloin steak were great, plus they weren't expensive at all. We didn't even pay 20 euros per person. We went back, and then they invited us to a glass of champagne. The service was really good. We would go back.
Taking advantage of one of the few really hot days in Gijon, what could be better than enjoying a refreshing drink overlooking the sea? Walking along the Paseo del Litoral de San Lorenzo, you'll find the Cafe Bar Nautical with a fantastic terrace, where you can enjoy cocktails with or without alcohol, coffee, tea, smoothies, or slushies. It's a bar/cafe with chill-out music, and we enjoyed an iced coffee on the fantastic summer terrace, looking out over the Cantabrian Sea.
