Gulf of Poets

Napoleon described the "Gulf of Poets" - also known as the Gulf of La Spezia - as the most beautiful gulf in the universe, not only for its charm and beauty, but also for its huge military potential. Although Napoleon's idea to construct a military complex never played out, but the Savoy took did in fact decide to build a large complex where the boats of the new Italian state would be constructed during the unification process (this year marks the 150th anniversary of the event: http://www.italiaunita150.it/). So in 1869 he opened the La Spezia arsenal and military installations, which still remain. Since then, the maritime and marina (merchant marine, shipbuilding and, more recently, cruise tourism) have become the economic and social engine of the La Spezia Gulf, although now it's become more popular for its tourist attractions. Many poets found their home here (Shelley, [poi = 628811] Lord Byron [/ poi] Wagner, Montale) and were all inspired by the beauty and romance of the cove Lerici, Tellaro, Porto Venere and other small villages are also on the sea and surrounded by green hills. The beauty of the Gulf is breathtaking, as well as each and every one of the villages. A visit here is almost obligatory if you plan to spend a few days in the region of Liguria!

The Cinque Terre Train

The train is ideal for travelling the Natural Park of Cinque Terre manner. You can buy single day or two day tickets; I recommend the second option. Of course, this is not a panoramic train as it goes through tunnels. The ticket allows you to travel to the central station of Levanto to La Spezia or vice versa, with the possibility to get off at any of the five villages. Corniglia and Monterosso al Mare, find navetta service included in the price.

Museo Tecnico Navale

We walked into this curious museum of the naval history of the city of La Spezia, is closely linked to the sea and travel. A piece of overseas history of Italy and their adventures after the conquests of the world, especially from a business perspective!. Don't forget that Genova is practically around the corner ;-)). It's one of those museums that goes unnoticed for being a bit cold, but once you enter, the amount of gadgets and history you find won't cease to impress you. We laughed a lot at this museum, because all of the other visitors were men and were surprised that three women were interested in naval history. We're travelers with curious minds!
Markets in La Spezia
La Spezia Central Market
(2)
In the historic center is a modern, different, undulating building, one of those rarities in the midst of the cities that suddenly attracts attention. The central market of La Spezia is a landmark, no walls, but a roof, winding arcades, and fantastic games. A species of ancient marketplace with awnings, but in a modern style with "street" stalls of fruits, vegetables, and fish. When evening falls, everything disappears, and the market is empty, like a whale carcass. Its one of the more curious markets I have seen, it's a worthwhile place to get a feel of the city.
Bars in La Spezia
Bar Khotee
It is an ideal place to have an aperitif and some nibbles, to have a drink or as a meeting place with friends. Right in the centre of La Spezia, Liguria, Italy, near the waterfront, it is modern and very welcoming. The atmosphere is relaxed and there is very nice music. Our recommendation is to go to Bar Khoote to taste the typical Italian "snack" : it involves having a mixed drink (usually alcoholic) that is served with a small snack ("one spuntino" in Italian). We opted to take a Spritz, a drink typical in northern Italy, especially in Veneto. Their opening hours are: Monday-Thursday: 17.00-00.00 Thursday: 17.00-00.00 Friday-Saturday: 17.00-01.00 Sunday: 17.00-23.00 Absolutely recommended!
