Cathedrals in Burgos
Burgos Cathedral
(179)
Construction on the cathedral in Burgos began in 1221 under Fernando III, the King of Castilla, and was dedicated in 1765 with the construction of the towers and the dome. The long time it took to build this gothic cathedral gives it a unique architectural coherence due to the changes in styles and influences over the centuries. It has four entrances. The basilica has three chambers surrounded by thirteen precious chapels and a cross chamber that measures 70 meters wide. It is the same height as the central chamber and forms a Latin cross.

The Cartuja of Miraflores Monastery

We talked about this place at the tourist office in Burgos. It is in Fuentes Blancas Park. It was commissioned by Queen Isabella in the XV century, in 1441, and later suffered in fire. Of particular interest is the altarpiece and the tomb of Juan II and Isabella of Portugal, with a third party, Prince Alfonso de Castilla. Today it is still inhabited by Carthusian monks, who have displayed some important paintings that were in the cloister, for tourists. Worth seeing. We recommend it.
Historical Monuments in Burgos
Arco de Santa María
(66)
The arch was built on an ancient tower in the thirteenth century. The main facade was created by Francisco de Colonia and Juan de Vallejo. The works were made from 1536 to 1553 and were finished off with the sculptures of Ochoa de Arteaga. Numerous figures are shown in the alterpiece: Carlos, El Cid and Fernan Gonzalez (centre); Diego Porcelos, Nuño Rasura and Lain Calvo (lower); the city guardian angel and Santa Maria (top). You can visit the inside of the church. Formerly it was used as a meeting room for the council. Since 1994 it features as an exhibition.
Gardens in Burgos
Paseo del Espolon

Forest This promenade is the most popular of all in Burgos. It was created in the late 17th century and connects the Arco de Santa Maria with the Teatro Principal, defining the historical district. It is situated on the right bank of the River Arlanzón and is an ideal place to go for a stroll or get a drink on one of the terraces.

Viewpoint of the Castle

The viewpoint of the castle is a must when you are in Burgos. Its views of the city are spectacular, now, I recommend that if you visit on a hot day you do drive, although it has many well kept parks. On the semicircle of the gazebo, you will find various monuments printed with directions included. Highly recommended.

Human Evolution Museum

The MEH is a must when you visit in Burgos. It is a modern museum, well maintained and with an unparalled historical interest, features that make it one of the best in Spain. Just the building itself is amazing. Inside, we take a quick look at our progress and learn more of our ancestors. There is very interesting visual work inside and its structure, in many plants, is interesting. An ideal complement to this visit is a visit to Atapuerca, which was just what we did.
Squares in Burgos
Plaza Mayor

Enchanting! Although we knew that the capital of Castilla y León is Valladolid, it has nothing to envy of Burgos. This square is one of the things that gives you reason to visit Valladolid one hundred times over. It is lovely; the colourful houses, the little shops ...

Las Huelgas Royal Monastery

My partner is from Burgos and we go there frequently to visit family. Although I´ve seen quite a few things from there, I had not yet seen this wonder, Las Huelgas Monastery ... I was so impressed. The size of this monastery is incredible as are the luxuries inside. I learned some very interesting things .... For example, it is the only museum that has the oldest civilian clothing in the world ... Inside is spectacular, the stalls, the organ of the main chapel, the tapestries, the brochures, the arches, the vaults ... Definitely worth the visit ...

Statues in Burgos
Statue of the Cid
(16)
This bronze statue is near the Puente de San Pablo and in front of the theater and was designed by Juan Cristóbal. Opened by Franco in 1955. I liked the characterization of the Cid, with his long beard and flying cloak with his sword directing his horse's trot.
Palaces in Burgos
Casa del Cordón
(8)
The Palace of the Constables of Castile (those ve ordered the construction) is best known as the Casa del Cordón, and is opposite the famous BBQ Casa Ojeda. Today, it houses the Caja de Burgos, and in the rear houses a cultural center where there are temporary exhibitions. It is a beautiful old palace flanked by two towers, Renaissance style, built in the late fifteenth century. The thing that most catches your attention is that there are some interesting balconies that come out from the first floor and they are closed with wooden windows. It houses a beautiful cloister. The Cord House was declared Monument in 1968, and also has its history: Many things happened here including the union of Navarre and Castile and it was the place that Columbus was received by Ferdinand returning from his second voyage to the Americas.
Historical Monuments in Burgos
San Juan Monastery
(5)
The ruins of this 11th century monastery, rebuilt in later times, were declared a historical monument in 1944. It was a pilgrim hospital, and belonged to the Benedictine order. Fragments are preserved from a 15th century church and chapter house of the XVI. Renaissance cloister, with a museum displaying the works of painter Burgos Marceliano Santamaria. It is located opposite the Church of San Lesmes. In the Plaza de San Juan there is also a statue in honor of the founder of the city, Diego Porcelos.
Bars in Burgos
Patillas Bar
(4)
"The temples", as three generations of Burgos know, is a bar you do not expect to find in a Spanish capital. It is the meeting place for all the flamenco lovers of the city, where a group of friends meet with their guitar, any day of the week, to sing. A whole party comes out of just one song. I would say more: it is the heart of the bohemian Burgos. The bar is named this way because of the owners sideburns ("patillas" in spanish), which in turn honours his father. I remember as a child seeing them together behind the bar (the bar is easily over 50years old)now it just the child runs it. Despite being an old bar, the atmosphere is very youthful. I imagine it is due to how cheap the beer and glasses of wine are. Forget about fancy cocktail, this is your everyday bar, confined space, walls full of photos and signatures of friends, noise, people coming in and out, one that starts to dance here, a reciting poetry there ... The Patillas is a unique place to which you go to escape from cold Burgos. You'll soon forget that you are in full central plateau. (A shame that I have no photos here now, but coming up are photos and a video).

The best things to do in Burgos

The amount of things to do in Burgos is impressive. Here you will find both religious and civil monuments, parks, museums, and endless possibilities of Burgos activities offered to the visitor. Perhaps the most important of the places to visit is the Cathedral of Santa Maria, a Catholic church with Gothic architecture. It houses Renaissance and Baroque decorations and the beautiful facade makes it one of the most famous things to see in Burgos.

Other important religious Burgos attractions include the Monasterio de Santa María la Real de Las Huelgas, a monastery which has some of the oldest stained glass in Spain, and the Cartuja de Miraflores, which is a monastic complex built on a hill about three kilometers from the city center and with stunning views.

But there's plenty of stuff to do in Burgos apart from the religious side of things, too, like seeing the Castillo de Burgos, Arco de Santa María, Castilfalé Palace, the Plaza de Alonso Martinez, and others. El Promenade is one of the most interesting natural attractions in Burgos. It is a wooded and landscaped city park. Still not sure what to do in Burgos?
