Fish Market

The fish market in Athens is next to the meat market, in the Agora. It covers two long aisles filled with baskets and boxes full of seafood. There are dozens of types of fish for sale. A few years ago the hygienic conditions were not at their best, and the Greek government received a slap on the wrist for the shop displays. It was ordered to improve the handling of food in the markets. The market is 100 years ago. If you go to the fish market I advise to wear shoes, walking shoes if possible, because the floor is rather wet, with a mixture of melted ice and "liquid fish". The fish stalls are a wonder as you can enjoy buying your food so close to its origin, choosing the freshest fish and varieties you want.

Apart from fish, there are lots of varieties of squid and octopus, all very fresh full of ice and occasional rain water.

A few years ago, the hygiene market were poor, and the Greek government has been pulling ears by his friends in other European countries, equip decent market stalls, and raise the level, which was the same as 100 years ago. If you go to the fish market, it's better to go with good shoes, preferably that hang well, because the ground is wet, water mixture that melted ice stands, and "juice fish "not very pleasant for those who enjoy walking with their flip flops. The stands are wonderfully busy and were brought to the port of Athens in the morning, they can no longer fresh. Found squid, octopus, shells, perfect if you have a small kitchen to the hotel to get a good dinner one evening, because in general the fish restaurants are quite expensive.
