The Best Hot Dog in Chicago

Excellent

What a find! And all thanks to a recommendation that I found on minube. I loved everything on this five day trip so much that I went again. Everything about this hot dog was unique: the bread's softness was second to none, the sausage, with a spectacular flavor, the pickle, it was absolutely unique and perfect for getting that unique taste. The location was well-organized and implemented the brilliant idea of writing down your order while standing in line. It also has a special bar for anyone who wants good cold beer. They have brands like Samuel Adams (Boston, a spectacular blonde), Blue Moon (Belgian, very good), Bud Lite (perfect if you're trying not to look like an idiot) ...

The atmosphere is perfect for the occasion. Oh, and a trick that a friendly American gave us was: under the stairs you'll find a hallway that goes towards a room that where it's usually easy to find a place to sit down.

Famous for a Reason

They call it Portillo's Hot Dogs, but it's the Italian Beef you should come for. Their famous recipe is famous for a reason: it's tender beef marinated in delicious flavors and piled high on Italian bread. It's hard to believe that you can get such a great sandwich with fries and a shake at such a low price, and I promise you won't leave hungry.

When you come, the secret is to order your sandwich with extra gravy. They'll ladle this delicious sauce right onto your sandwich. It's a little messy to eat, but isn't everything good in life a little messy sometimes? If you really want it juicy, ask for it dipped, but never, ever get it dry. That's akin to buying a $100 steak and having it burnt to a crisp before eating. Add hot peppers if you dare: they're a great flavor and live up to their "hot" name.

There are several locations in Chicago and in my opinion, just head to wherever's convenient. Then, be careful you don't head back a second time in your trip. It's addicting!

Este local es el mascarón de proa de la cadena de restaurantes Portillo's. Es un edificio antiguo profusamente iluminado por dentro y por fuera en la zona de River North. Está concebido como una gran 'food court' con una ambientación de época de los años 40, muy lograda. Alrededor del comedor se disponen varios mostradores en los que se sirven por un lado los bocadillos y hamburguesas, pasta y ensaladas y bebidas alcohólicas. La ambientación representa un callejón del Chicago de los años 40 y las barras son como si fueran tiendas, donde uno hace cola para comprar la comida. La especialidad de la casa son los hot dogs y el italian beef , el bocadillo insignia de Chicago: Finas tiras de buey con salsa de su cocción dentro de un pan de perrito caliente. Lo sirven soft o hard (con o sin jalapeño). La comida no es sofisticada, pero está buena. Para un refrigerio rápido y de calidad constrastada, en un ambiente típico, Portillo's es la mejor elección.

Alors là sans contestation possible, il faut aller chez Portillo. On a adoré. À la base, Portillo était spécialisé en hot dog. Aujourd’hui, il propose aussi toutes sortes de hamburgers. Mais Portillo, ce n’est pas que la bouffe qui est par ailleurs excellente. C’est aussi le lieu. C’est chaleureux, convivial et très américain. Drapeaux, bannières… Et aussi d’anciennes photos de personnages célèbres, de lieux… Et puis les serveuses ! Elles font le show non-stop. Elles chantent. Elles dansent… Bref, c’est un endroit où l’on mange bien (sandwichs) et pas cher où l’ambiance et le lieu sont super. Dick Portillo a ouvert son premier établissement en 1963. Depuis, il en a 47.
