The Le Prieuré restaurant is one of my favorite places to eat in the Pays de la Loire region. It is a must if you do the route of the "Loire by bike", since this castle-hotel is perched on a hill which overlooks the river has wonderful views. The attentive service at Le Prieuré is a 'extra' to take into account, you receive personal attention at all times. The simple and elegant terrace restaurant offers a place of tranquility coming from the forests which surround the Loire. The lounge, with its large windows, is decorated with great detail and expertise. And the food ... what about the menu?! The dishes are excellent and are all prepared using local produce. What I loved was a salad of salmon, cheese and seeds. In Le Prieuré restaurant you can enjoy the view as well as the taste and smell. It is a luxury to eat in this impressive castle hotel built in the XVI century.
In the middle of the Loire, Anjou wines are produced in one of the region's largest vineyards. With a total production area of 20,000 hectares (along with those of Saumur), or 20 football fields, this land enjoys great diversity and concentrates more than 28 denominations of origin, some with exceptional products, like the Layon in the hills, the Savernnières on the banks of the Loire, the Anjou in the south, and the sparkling Saumur brut (dry). All make their way to the best tables. Anjou wines are noted for their flavor and variety: white, red, pink, soft, dry or semi-dry, sparkling. Choosing one depends on the food that it will accompany, though they all taste traditional. These wines are matured in interesting white tuff underground tunnels, in troglodyte houses or cellar-mills. The world's wine fans can discover the taste of the earth that bathes the Loire wines of Anjou. They won't disappoint!
The downtown restaurant called The Alchimiste is run by very lovely man in Saumur. The traditional cuisine is the clearest evidence that a good home-cooked meal beats everything else! The Alchimiste's tranquil appearance invites you to passionately taste all its specialties while discovering the city's old beauty. The taste of French cuisine recovers all its glory here! The Alchimiste doesn't pretend! You pay for delicious and plentiful food. For about 17 € you can eat a delicious fixed-menu of two courses, dessert and a drink. It's a very good option during your stay in Pays de la Loire.
If you appreciate traditional French food and you always try the regional specialties, then I recommend you visit the restaurant Auberge Reine de Sicile in Saumur. Located on the Ile d'Offard, this rustic and charming restaurant brings together the best dishes from the Pays de la Loire in a menu full of traditional delicacies that taste wonderful. The atmosphere is cozy and simple, which contrasts with the elaborate meals. The innovative recipes and the taste of the products combine to perfectly. The wine selection is excellent. Discover the tastes of Saumur in the restaurant Auberge Reine de Sicile.
The Brussels Café Brasserie brings on a tray the distinctive flavors of Belgium and France, in front of the theater in Saumur. This fantastic place is the ideal place to regain strength after a long hard day getting to know one of the most beautiful cities in the Pays de la Loire region. If you want to try a dish uncommon in Spain, I recommend you ask for mussels and fries served with some of the sauces. Otherwise, go for the 'choucroutes': a type of pasta served with all kinds of meat (sausages, bacon, steaks ...). Everything is very tasty in Brussels Café!!
Many visitors find it strange when they hear about cave restaurants, but in Pays de la Loire these places are very famous. Dug into tufa stone, these caves have been transformed into authentic restaurants serving the most delicious and original dishes of Saumur. The Tablee des Fouees is a real example of this type of restaurant. With medieval décor, this place makes the best regional delicacies like mushrooms, 'rillettes' oysters, 'rillauds' of Anjou, jams and others whose tastes and quality will fascinate you. Don't miss an opportunity to visit this amazing cave tavern and discover a new Pays de la Loire: their restaurants!
Situated on the very route of the castles of the Loire and in the middle of a troglodyte village, Le Saut aux Loups is a wonderful restaurant dug into the mountain which serves delicious 100% healthy food. Le Saut aux Loups is a charming troglodyte restaurant which puts the most typical specialties of the Pays de la Loire in a menu suitable for all pockets. The place, besides being wonderful, opens into the steep hillside opposite the Loire River and has majestic views. The food, of excellent quality, combines the most representative ingredients of the region. The English-born owner, is one of the friendliest people. All around you see see the work of many of the craftsmen who settled there. The Cave Restaurant Aux Loups Le Saut is a fantastic place to try to get close to the excellent French cuisine.
The L'Escargot is a really nice place to spend some entertaining time sharing more than food. The good atmosphere in this restaurant is contagious and also attracts many visitors who are attracted by the aroma coming from the kitchen. Most of the dishes are prepared with typical regional products which you can find in Saumur. Among the specialties are, and how could it be otherwise, snails cooked in the French style. A fairly common recipe which tastes different depending on the chosen sauce. L'Escargot is a bit far from downtown, but in the area you can enjoy a relaxed atmosphere.
