L'estany of Banyoles (situated in the province of Girona) has an area of 107 hectares and a characteristic figure-8. As is the case with the other lakes, there is a legend about a creature that lives in the water. According to a legend dating back to the 7th Century, a great beast took shelter on the shores of the lake. The monster, was the last descendant of the prehistoric beasts who used to inhabit the region. They say his eyes gave off fire, and his breath stank so much that a blow was able to dry out all the plants, poison the sources and destroy the fields with the most horrible diseases spread to humans and animals.
The fish are small swamp buildings located along the shore of Lake Banyoles. They were built in the early twentieth century and during that time wealthy families came to take baths or to use it as a spot to store their fishing gear. These days they are mostly small homes that allow boats and barges to stay there. Some of them have been restored and still serve their original function, while others show a certain state of neglect. The tourist office is in one of the fishing villages.
Next to the famous lake of the same name is the bustling town of Banyoles, whose old town surrounds the ancient monastery of Sant Esteve. It is also home to the thirteenth century Gothic church of Santa Maria dels Turers, the beautiful Pia Almoina building, which serves as the seat of the Archaeological Museum and the main square full of arcades and restaurants serving good tapas. If you are feeling hungry, you must try the wonderful Tortada, made from local fresh eggs with an almond base. We had intended to go to the beach on Monday June 13 as it is a holiday in Catalonia but the rain spoiled it so my wife and two kids decided to go to Magic Planet in Banyoles. We had a great time and also enjoyed a wonderful steak there.
