It was the work of architect Jean-Ange Brun, who built it near the Rhone, in order to allow the salt to be unloaded easily. It has an imposing facade, and a door that opens, supported by pillars. The building was restored for cultural and commercial activities. For example, during the festival of Avignon, a great theater festival in July, it is host to various plays and cultural events. In front of the building is the gate line, that faces towards the timber port, which is where it gets the name "Ligne" from. It was very small and not very strong so the location was changed to Palapharnerie Street near the new salt barn.
