Buffalos Market

Once a week, on Fridays, there is a celebration in a fascinating Rantepao buffalo market, where people from across the region gather to buy and sell buffaloes, which are a very valuable commodity in Tana Toraja. The buffalo is symbolic in funeral culture and whenever someone dies family will hold a funeral in which buffalo will be killed in proportion to the economic status of the family. A buffalo can be sold for as much as $10,000 in the market.
