Chinese Fishing Nets

13 reviews of Chinese Fishing Nets

Trad method, today touristy

One of the biggest tourist attractions in Cochin. In the 8th century there were Chinese settlers in this area and it is believed to have been a Chinese merchant family who brought Jan Kubilai these networks to Cochin. With the Muslim invasion it disappeared but later, in the early 16th century with the Portuguese colonization, it was reintroduced, bringing these networks of the Portuguese colony of Macau, in southeastern China. They are wooden structures with a foothold on land, when not in use, the network and its frame are suspended over the water, the nets are lowered into the water and left within 5 to 15 minutes, then raised, pulling on the strings to which are tied large stones as a counterbalance, thus catching the fish are close to shore.
