A historic monument

Santa Maria Cathedral is the main Roman Catholic church of Newcastle. The church governs the diocese of the city. It was built in the first half of the nineteenth century by Augustus Pugin. This is a truly historic monument because it is a very good example of the Gothic Revival style. With a decree from Pope Plus IX, the Catholic Church has an important role in England, after a long period of Anglicanism. The church was opened to the public in 1844 and took the official title of cathedral in 1850.

It is located near the Newcastle resort, which is in the middle of two cathedrals, Anglican and Catholic.
