Of Cultural Interest in Frankfort
Jesse R. Zeigler House
Most would say that having a chance to see the architectural work of Frank Lloyd Wright is a dream for many architects, myself included. During my first trip to Kentucky, I had the opportunity to go to Frankfort and I could see the house that Frank Lloyd Wright designed for the Rev. Jesse Ziegler, but sadly it is private property and you can only see the outside. The house, which is an excellent example of the type of creation designed by the architect Wright, was declared a National Monument in 1976 and is the only work by Wright in the state of Kentucky.
Of Cultural Interest in Frankfort
Kentucky State Capitol
We hadn't planned to visit Frankfort during our trip last summer, but because of a little setback along the way, we ended up in what is the capital of the state of Kentucky. Most Europeans probably haven't even heard of this town with its German name. It's one of the smallest capitals in the US, and contains little more than the state's public administration buildings. The most important building here, the State Capitol, sits on top of a little hill, just like its more famous equivalent in Washington DC. It's home to the executive, legislative and judicial branches of Kentucky's state government and is quite impressive to look at. It stands at the end of a wide tree-lined street, so its dome can be seen from afar. It may not have a lot of artistic value, but if you go to Frankfurt, you really should see it...if only because there's nothing else to visit in the city!
