Celebrating the abolition of slavery
The Buxton Memorial, designed in a Gothic style by Samuel Sanders Teulon in 1865, is a monument that commemorates the abolition of slavery in the British Empire. It originally stood in Parliament Square, but was removed in 1949 and moved in 1957 to its present location to mark the 150th anniversary of the abolition. A gift from Charles Buxton in memory of his father Sir Thomas Fowell Buxton, the monument features many different materials including granite, limestone, sandstone, marble, wrought iron, mosaic and terracotta.
