Praça da Republica

3 reviews of Praça da Republica

Central and busy

Republic Square (Praça da República) is one of the most central and busy in the city. It's in the lower area near the river and the bridge connecting the center of Vila do Conde with Azurara. From the square the steep street with stairs gives access to the upper area, where the Church and Convent of Santa Clara and the impressive aqueduct are. The square is large with several flowerbeds and gardens, in the center there's a granite fountain and a sculpture (bust) of Domingos de Azevedo Antunes. The square's most important building is Casa dos Vasconcelos.

Republica Square

This square is surrounded by beautiful trees and is adorned with hedges and colorful flowers which makes it more than a beautiful garden to walk in. It's a large square in the center of the city, along the river and overlooks the Monastery of Santa Clara in all its glory. There are some quaint restaurants and cafes which I recommend, such as the restaurant Le Villageois. Its cobbled streets and brightly painted houses are another attraction - a beautiful space to relax in.
